This idea started when was inspired by a talk by Joe Walker that I saw at The Arts University Bournemouth last year. This talk has been on my mind ever since.
I wanted to make an instrument.
Joe Walker did an architecture degree at AUB, and as part of his degree he made a fully functional piano. He was very inspirational and engaging in his practice. He made the piano from scratch. I found that the idea of making your own instrument very inspiring, and I wanted to do the same. However, I didn’t want to make a piano.
Since, I will be looking at future technology in my main project, I wanted to do something different for my sound project. Instead of looking forwards I want to look backwards. In a similar way to Sapiens and Homo Deus.
This is something that I have mentioned previously as in my post, ‘initial ideas for the sound project‘. That my other inspiration, the inspiration to create a Jouhikko comes from the bands Solstafir, obscurus orbis and Heilung. They produce rock music inspired by primitive folk music, using a mixture of modern and traditional instruments.
The Jouhikko is an instrument traditional to Finland, it has 3 strings and plays like a small cello.
