This is a video piece where I have drawn inspiration from all of the work that I have done so far throughout this project.

Vispo 2 is referenced throughout this piece as it’s the furthest development of my artistic style so far. In addition, works as a visual support for the narration. Vispo 2 was a development and refinement of Vispo 1, which in turn has been influenced by my research into Sonja Ahlers and Clunie Reid’s work, and War Primer 2. Hence, referencing Vispo 2 in this video, symbolises my artistic progression throughout the whole of this project.

This piece links to “Linear, yet corrupted timeline” work where I mentioned how much the world has changed while I haven’t been observing it, as well as, my “Returning monologue”.  The rabbit represents me because when I returned home for the holidays, I realised that my room had been turned into a gym that a rabbit now resides in. Which instantly made me think of the rabbit people in Inland Empire by David Lynch. The rabbits in that film represent the surreal, obscure and false realities. Which seemed apt for a person that had just realised they had been usurped by a rabbit.  

The style of layering video was largely inspired by “The heart of a dog”, as well as how the director would consistently use 2 photos and then a section of video. This consistency gave the film an interesting rhythm; similar to a heart beat. However, the pacing of this video is far faster than “The heart of a dog” because I wanted to display society’s anxiety about time. As highlighted in “Homo deus”, time is currently a currency. Which in turn links to my research on “Serpent rain”, which was made with the intention of being a film without time.

The heart of a dog” also inspired the narration of this piece, as I wanted to use a clear, measured voice to contradict the fast pace of the video. The narration in “The heart of a dog” is hypnotic and docile, putting the audience at ease. I wanted to do the same in this piece, but in order to lull the audience into a false sense of security. As the monologue would highlight my key realisations about time and language.

Throughout this project I have focused on progressing my writing, giving myself more confidence to work in that style. I think that the monologue in this piece was effective, short and sweet. In addition, it links well to the language research that I have done, and the chapters on the formation of language in Sapiens that I found so interesting.

I would like to develop this piece by projecting it through some burnt acetate to see what effect it would have on the projection. I reckon it would produce interesting shadows and a distortion of the video. That distortion also links to my research into time, language and the reality we perceive. How it’s imperfect and subjective. And the manipulation of light links strongly to the light drawing work that I have been experimenting with. The distortion of the light and abstraction of the image, would make for a visually intriguing piece.


This piece could be improved by being longer. I think it’s too short at present. All that’s needed is more footage and a longer monologue. Having a slower pace would really suit the subject matter and would make it more impactful. As mentioned in VISPO 2, “I have a tendency to crowd my composition when I’m passionate about the artwork I’m producing,” despite, ironically, enjoying the effect of the minimalist aesthetic. If this was a longer video, I wouldn’t have felt like I have the need to make the composition so crowded throughout the video, as it would be a sufficient display of my capability.
